SMLE · Saudi Dental Licensure Examination (SDLE)

The complete guide to the SMLE (SDLE) licensing exam

Dentists in Saudi Arabia sit what SCFHS officially calls the SDLE — the Saudi Dental Licensure Examination (SMLE is the physicians' exam). It's a scaled-score exam, not a percentage, delivered via Prometric. Here's exactly what SCFHS's own applicant guide says.

Attempts

The Applicant Guide allows up to four a year, one per testing window. SCFHS's exam-dates page words the limit differently — check your remaining attempts in Mumaris+.

Results turnaround

Not instant — psychometric analysis after each testing window closes takes two to six weeks.

The pathway

From application to your SDLE result

SCFHS's own process for a foreign-trained dentist: classification through Mumaris+, then the SDLE.

  1. Step 1: Confirm your eligibility

A recognized dental degree (BDS or equivalent). If you're not Saudi, SCFHS's Professional Classification also asks for at least one year of experience, your home-country registration and an employment letter. (Final-year sitting is for students at Saudi universities.)

  2. Step 2: Verify through DataFlow and apply on Mumaris+

SCFHS requires a DataFlow Primary Source Verification report attached in Mumaris+ before your classification is processed. Once your application is accepted, a scheduling permit with your eligibility period arrives by email.

  3. Step 3: Book your Prometric slot

Scheduling isn't available more than three months in advance. You can test at any SCFHS-approved Prometric centre, whether that's inside Saudi Arabia or internationally.

  4. Step 4: Sit the exam

Two blocks of 100 questions, 120 minutes each, with a 30-minute break between them. Four options per question, single best answer. Up to 10% of the questions may be unscored pilot items. Arriving more than 30 minutes late, or not showing up, counts as an attempt.

  5. Step 5: Get your results

Not instant — results are announced two to six weeks after your testing window closes. You'll get two reports: a statement of results, and a feedback report comparing your performance to other test-takers.

What SCFHS's applicant guide actually says

The specifics that catch candidates off guard if they walk in expecting DHA-style rules.

It's a scaled score, not a percentage

The passing score is 542 on a 200-800 scale, set by a standard-setting exercise with Saudi dental experts. There's no "60%" to aim for here — don't try to translate it into one.

One sitting per testing window

The Applicant Guide allows up to four attempts a year from your first attempt, one per window — a second sitting in the same window is invalidated. SCFHS's exam-dates page states the limits differently, so check your remaining attempts in Mumaris+.

You can keep testing after you pass

Once you have a passing score, you're eligible for two further attempts specifically to improve your mark — useful for a stronger residency-selection position.

A rule for candidates who fail

In SCFHS's words: "SCFHS classification and registration rules and regulations apply to candidates who fail the SDLE for two years after the graduation date."

DataFlow verification is required

SCFHS needs a DataFlow Primary Source Verification report before it processes your classification. It's a new SCFHS-specific application, though DataFlow offers a report-transfer option if you were verified for another authority.

SCFHS runs its own official practice exam

SCFHS offers an official SDLE practice test, drawn from its item bank to match the blueprint — worth taking alongside your other preparation.

SMLE / SDLE FAQ

Questions candidates actually ask

Answered against SCFHS's own applicant guide, not UAE-style assumptions.

Is SMLE the same thing as the SDLE?

No. SMLE is SCFHS's licensure exam for physicians; dentists sit the SDLE (Saudi Dental Licensure Examination). Many candidates still search for "SMLE dental", which is why both names appear here.

How is the exam scored, since there's no percentage?

SDLE uses a scaled score on a 200-800 range, with a passing score of 542 set by a standard-setting panel of Saudi dental experts. Don't try to convert it to a percentage — it isn't one.

How many attempts do I get?

SCFHS's Applicant Guide says up to four a year, one per testing window, plus two improvement attempts after a pass. SCFHS's exam-dates page describes it differently (two additional attempts after a fail, repeats after a year) — so check your remaining attempts in Mumaris+ before booking.

When do I get my results?

Not instantly — two to six weeks after your testing window closes, since SCFHS runs a psychometric analysis first. You'll receive both a statement of results and a feedback report comparing your performance to other test-takers.

Do I need DataFlow verification for Saudi Arabia?

Yes. SCFHS requires the final DataFlow Primary Source Verification report to be attached in Mumaris+ before your classification is processed. You need a new SCFHS-specific DataFlow application, or DataFlow's report-transfer service if you were verified for another authority.

Can I sit the exam before I graduate?

Students at Saudi universities can sit in their final year. Foreign-trained dentists apply through Mumaris+ Professional Classification, which needs your degree, home registration, DataFlow verification and at least one year of experience.

Where do I actually sit the exam?

At any SCFHS-approved Prometric testing centre, inside Saudi Arabia or internationally. Booking isn't available more than three months in advance, so plan around your eligibility period once your scheduling permit is issued.
